The Stardust @ Home initiative at UC Berkeley is leveraging Amazon S3 to archive millions of scanned images. These images represent virtual cross-sections of an extraordinary material known as aerogel, which was collected from the tail of a comet and brought back to Earth. Nestled within the outermost 100 microns of the aerogel are approximately 50 grains of cosmic dust, and the goal of this project is to identify each one. It’s akin to locating a needle in a haystack, albeit with much smaller needles amidst a vast amount of hay.
Participants from around the globe will meticulously sift through these scanned images to spot the distinctive signatures of space dust. Once a particle is identified, it will be extracted from the aerogel for further analysis.
Previously, I mentioned that sometimes only a little storage is needed. However, there are instances, like this one, where a substantial amount is required (30 million high-resolution images, to be precise), but not necessarily for an extended duration. This exemplifies the value of scalable, on-demand storage solutions. Research initiatives often lack the financial resources to purchase costly storage hardware, and once the project concludes, they typically have no further use for it. In this context, Amazon S3 proves to be an ideal solution.
