We are excited to announce that you can now opt to receive updates via Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) for a broad range of events linked to your Relational Database Service (RDS) instances.

Why Notifications?

For database administrators (DBAs), these “push” notifications offer a way to be alerted when your RDS DB Instances are experiencing low storage or have successfully recovered from a failure.

If your application or management tools utilize the AWS APIs, they must monitor the state of the AWS objects they manage. By leveraging notifications instead of frequently polling (repeatedly executing the “Describe” functions), you can minimize the number of API calls and streamline your application architecture.

The Details

You can set up notifications for any of your RDS DB Instances by creating an Event Subscription. Notifications will be sent to your chosen Amazon SNS topic when specific events occur. Over 40 different types of notifications are available, categorized into the following groups:

  • Availability – Database shutdown or restart.
  • Backup – Backup initiated or completed.
  • Configuration Change – Modifications to security groups, instance scaling, password changes, and more.
  • Creation – Creation or deletion of an instance or snapshot.
  • Failover – Initiation or completion of a failover (for Multi-AZ Instances).
  • Low Storage – Exhaustion of allocated storage.
  • Maintenance – Going offline or coming back online for patching.
  • Recovery – Recovery of a database instance.
  • Restoration – Restoring a database instance from a snapshot or to a specific point in time.

You can also configure SNS to receive notifications via email. Management of these notifications can be done through RDS APIs or the AWS Management Console. In the console, there is now a dedicated section for DB Event Subscriptions.

To create a new subscription, simply click the appropriate button and fill out the necessary form.
