Since its inception in 2010, Worldreader has reached over 22 million readers in more than 100 countries through its mobile reading technology, earning recognition with the US Library of Congress Literacy Award’s International Prize. Their approach combines locally sourced children’s literature in various languages with motivational challenges and rewards, enabling children to meet their goal of reading 25 or more books a year with comprehension.

The Worldreader team devised a solution leveraging Amazon Bedrock and the Anthropic Claude 3 Opus large language model (LLM) within a serverless framework that integrates multiple AWS services to create an efficient, scalable content generation pipeline.

  • AWS Lambda for event-driven text extraction and prompt preparation.

These guidelines ensure that activities are appropriate for children from various backgrounds, whether reading with a parent or another responsible adult. The LLM can also analyze books in languages like Swahili, allowing Worldreader to generate activities that provide a near-native speaker experience.

This solution enables Worldreader to translate a digital book—a process that previously took days—into less than one minute. This rapid translation paves the way for creating suitable book-aligned activities within the app, delivering a personalized experience for a wide array of readers.

A significant technical accomplishment was the system’s multilingual capability. The Anthropic Claude 3 Opus model exhibited remarkable proficiency in handling non-English content, with the ability to read Swahili books without translation and provide BAAs in language closely resembling a native speaker’s experience.

The serverless architecture of the solution enables cost-effective scalability. AWS Lambda functions handle on-demand book text extraction, while Step Functions orchestrate the workflow from text extraction to BAA generation. The system can efficiently scale to support BAAs for thousands of books as necessary.

During the implementation phase, the capabilities of Claude 3 Opus allowed for eliminating the translation step entirely, thus reducing both cost and complexity. Working natively in Swahili also removed the risk of compounded translation errors from back-and-forth translations.
