The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is actively seeking innovative technological solutions to tackle its most pressing challenges. By leveraging cloud-based systems, the department aims to enhance incident response capabilities, streamline data logging and analysis, expedite investigations, and ultimately save lives.

Recently, Slalom, a prominent consulting partner of Amazon Web Services (AWS), organized a two-day hackathon that gathered technology enthusiasts to devise inventive solutions tailored to the needs of local law enforcement. Participants utilized AWS resources to access reference architectures and tools, enabling them to optimize processes for managing and securing law enforcement data.

“The chance to collaborate with cloud technology experts opened our eyes to the potential improvements in system accessibility and performance, which will keep our officers better informed and enhance services for our communities,” stated Alex Ramirez, CIO of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.

The event brought together members from local law enforcement, students from the University of San Diego, and partners from AWS, Slalom, and other organizations to create solutions that address the challenges facing law enforcement. Ramirez emphasized that “without initiatives like these and partnerships with industry leaders, we wouldn’t have had the chance to grasp the full potential of emerging technologies.”

This collaborative environment allowed participants from diverse backgrounds to discuss how technological advancements can enhance operational processes and ensure critical information is accessible to those who need it most. The proposed solutions provide law enforcement agencies with real-time data access, improving situational awareness and facilitating connections to vital resources for drug intervention, social services, and medical assistance.

“This platform was entirely new to us before this hackathon,” remarked Tara Johnson, Senior IT Engineer at the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. “Once we engaged with the services, we quickly identified suitable applications for our skills and developed a ‘proof of concept’ in under two days.”

By utilizing cloud resources, participants constructed an architecture that identifies key data points and promotes transparency. Johnson added, “Our ability to achieve our objectives showcases the capabilities of cloud architectures that enable us to validate potentially lifesaving applications without incurring upfront capital expenses.”

AWS, along with its network of innovative partners, focuses on addressing the core issues faced by customers. By comprehending the objectives of San Diego Law Enforcement, teams were able to implement cloud architectures and tools that facilitated a high-visibility, cloud-based intake process.

“The team at Soma Global has consistently collaborated with law enforcement to create impactful solutions for their urgent challenges,” said Emily Whitaker, Founder and CEO of Soma Global. “The hackathon served as an engaging platform to interact with actual users and rapidly prototype solutions, ensuring immediate feedback. Events like this will foster innovation in law enforcement and among first responders.”

Participants had access to tools such as Amazon Lex, Amazon Polly, AWS Lambda, and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to integrate new techniques into their data management and officer communications. The cloud infrastructure allows for the development, testing, and validation of potentially lifesaving applications with greater flexibility and without the financial burden associated with traditional on-premises data storage.
