Mike from CloudTech recently shared insights regarding their latest deployment of FindTheBest. With his consent, I’m pleased to relay some of the specifics to provide you with a clearer understanding of how an adept developer integrates a variety of technologies to create a comprehensive web application.
What is FindTheBest?
FindTheBest serves as an unbiased comparison search engine that empowers users to select a topic, evaluate options, and determine what suits them best. It facilitates quicker and more informed decision-making by simplifying the comparison process among all available alternatives.
The platform is categorized into nine major segments, which include: Arts and Entertainment, Business and Economy, Education, Health, Reference, Science, Society, Sports and Recreation, and Technology. Each category is populated with numerous applications, ranging from Adventure Travel Vacations to Job Websites. Each application features a collection of related listings, from ski resorts like Vail and Whistler under the Ski Resorts app to celebrities such as Barack Obama and Angelina Jolie within the Celebrities app, with each listing sortable by various key filters.
FindTheBest’s structured search feature enables users to swiftly navigate through relevant factors and filters, ultimately enhancing their ability to make objective and well-informed decisions on critical inquiries. The user interface seamlessly integrates sorting, filtering, and comparison to generate rapid, data-driven pages. For instance, here’s a page detailing information on over 9000 libraries:
How Was it Implemented?
FindTheBest is hosted on a 64-bit Ubuntu server. The server boots from an EBS volume and utilizes an XFS RAID-0 two-volume EBS storage configuration, complete with daily snapshots facilitated by cron-driven calls to Eric Hammond’s ec2-consistent-snapshot script. The architecture employs a classic LAMP stack, supplemented by a lightweight email server and a full-text search engine, all overseen by a custom-tuned Nagios/Groundwork setup.
