Addressing water crises is a key Sustainable Development Goal, and the decline of accessible, quality freshwater ranks among the top ten societal risks in the World Economic Forum’s 2018 Global Risks report. Through satellite imagery available via the AWS Open Data Program and the AWS Cloud, BlueDot Observatory is creating a global monitoring system for at-risk water bodies. This initiative reveals a disheartening reality—the impending loss of water bodies may not be far off. We invited Laura Smith, a data scientist managing BlueDot Observatory at Sinergise, to discuss how the AWS Open Data Program and the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative support this critical work.

Cities invest heavily in traffic studies annually, which guide traffic signal timings and detours during street closures. However, the City of Louisville, Kentucky, realized they were spending significant funds on static reports from traffic analysis. Instead, they opted to utilize real-time congestion data made available to governments through the Waze CCP (Connected Citizens Program). By integrating this data with additional resources like built environment data and collision reports, Louisville is harnessing cloud technology for advanced analytics.
