Managing water crises aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, and the decline in both the quality and quantity of fresh water has been identified as one of the top ten societal risks by the World Economic Forum’s 2018 Global Risks report. Utilizing satellite imagery through the AWS Open Data Program and the AWS Cloud, BlueDot Observatory is establishing a worldwide monitoring system for vulnerable water bodies. The findings reveal a concerning reality—the potential loss of these water sources is imminent. We invited Mark Lee, a data scientist at Sinergise, to discuss how the AWS Open Data Program and the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative support this critical endeavor.

To enhance cloud service accessibility for disaster response organizations, we introduced the AWS Disaster Response Program (AWS DRP). This initiative fosters partnerships with governments, NGOs, nonprofits, and educational institutions focusing on disaster response. Moreover, the AWS DRP is creating a capacity to deploy technical AWS staff during crises, directly assisting organizations in utilizing AWS technology via the AWS Disaster Response Action Team (AWS DRT).
AWS Field Trips Expand Globally with AWS Educate

In line with our commitment to promoting accessibility in STEM education, we conduct AWS Field Trips to engage young students with cloud technology. Launched at AWS re:Invent three years ago, the program aims to inspire middle school students to pursue careers in STEM through interactive experiences with technology. The program has since expanded to Madrid, Spain, and Ottawa, Canada, and will now reach several global AWS Summits in 2019, continuing to engage students worldwide.
