At Amazon, fostering innovation is paramount, and diverse teams are crucial to that process. To promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the tech industry, we actively support initiatives like Girls in Tech, a global nonprofit with over 70,000 members. Despite women earning 57% of bachelor’s degrees in 2019, they only represented 21% of those in computer and information sciences. Moreover, women hold 57% of all professional roles in the US workforce, but only 26% of computing positions, with BIPOC women often comprising a significantly lower percentage in STEM fields. It is evident that change is urgently needed.

In the spring of 2019, environmental modelers at the Lake Michigan Air Directors Consortium (LADCO) faced a pressing challenge. Research on air pollution around the Great Lakes showed that simulating pollution events required a finer level of detail than our in-house high-performance computing (HPC) cluster could provide. To meet this demand, LADCO modelers utilized AWS ParallelCluster to access the necessary HPC resources, enabling them to conduct modeling more efficiently and scale effectively for member states.
