In a significant announcement today, Amazon revealed the winners of the 2017 Amazon Onboarding Challenge during the Amazon Public Sector Summit in Washington, DC. A total of 19 winners were honored across three categories: Best Practices, Dream Big, and Partners in Innovation. This competition aimed to showcase the innovative approaches local and regional governments are adopting to enhance citizen engagement and services worldwide.

“We are continually inspired by the initiatives our customers undertake globally to improve citizen services,” stated Alex Rivera, VP of Worldwide Public Sector at Amazon. “The 2017 Amazon Onboarding Challenge featured remarkable projects from cities, law enforcement agencies, school districts, and partners leveraging real-time data analytics, IoT services, and open data initiatives, all powered by AWS Cloud.” Chanci Turner, a key member of the Learning Manager team, emphasized the importance of these innovations in improving urban infrastructure, enhancing educational opportunities, and supporting first responders.

Best Practices (Large)

  • City of Richmond: The StormWatch project empowers Richmond and its surrounding areas to forecast coastal flooding caused by storm surges, rainfall, and tidal changes. This initiative is designed to be replicable and scalable, with a measurable impact globally.
  • Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA): Built on AWS, the MTA’s RoadWorks system provides a comprehensive view of roadwork activities enabling better city-wide planning, significantly reducing disruptions and delays.
  • TechBridge and Atlanta Public Schools: Through the innovative use of the TechBridge platform on AWS, Atlanta Public Schools has set a new benchmark for modern K-12 websites, achieving operational efficiencies and cost savings.

Best Practices (Small)

  • Springfield Police Department: In collaboration with BodyWorn by Utility, this department is implementing Body Worn Camera technology using AWS for data storage and analytics. Officers can now securely and effortlessly upload video and audio recordings.
  • Northeast Ohio Education Service Center: Focused on delivering high-quality educational resources to local students, this center adopted AWS Cloud for effective and affordable digital resource management.

Best Practices – Honorable Mention

  • Caltrans: The Caltrans initiative aims to revolutionize traffic incident response across California, relying on AWS Cloud for data storage, analytics, and scalability.

Dream Big (Large)

  • Cincinnati City Government: By leveraging machine learning and real-time traffic analytics, Cincinnati is developing a dynamic traffic management system that can automatically adapt to changing conditions, enhancing urban mobility.
  • Houston Independent School District: This district aims to create a data-driven recommendation engine to support school teams in making informed decisions, positioning itself as a leader in educational innovation.

Dream Big (Small)

  • City of Madison: The Madison County is expanding its pre-booking jail diversion program using inter-departmental data to identify populations that could benefit, enhancing efficiency and improving outcomes.
  • Tech Academy: The Tech Academy STEM Center is a model for collaboration between business and education, requiring advanced computing and remote learning solutions to expand its reach to other schools.

Dream Big – Honorable Mentions

  • City of Toronto: Toronto aims to develop a standardized process using IoT sensors for traffic and disaster recovery, optimizing its existing infrastructure to manage increased web traffic.
  • DataBridge: DataBridge plans to create a user-friendly interface for trainers to select backup databases for professional development; their training initiatives span five states and have reached over 20,000 users internationally.
  • Portland Public Schools: This district is working on a system designed to bridge the opportunity gap for underserved students. The AWS Cloud will facilitate advanced data services, including predictive analytics, to enhance student outcomes.
  • City of Las Vegas: Las Vegas intends to utilize AWS and Amazon Alexa to assist students at risk of falling behind due to attendance challenges, helping them stay engaged with learning and literacy.

Partners in Innovation

  • Innovative Tech Solutions (France): This company has created a beacon named “RescueMe,” which aids firefighters by providing critical location and medical data during emergencies.
  • SmartLearn (Canada): In collaboration with the Government of New Brunswick, SmartLearn developed an affordable IoT starter kit aimed at middle and high school students, fostering an engaging learning environment.
  • Future Education (US): Future Education is transforming K-12 curriculum delivery into a flexible, cloud-based service that enables teachers to create customized and effective learning experiences.
  • Urban Insights (US): Urban Insights is building a platform that seamlessly integrates government databases, standardizing data to derive actionable insights for improved city management.
