Education Dive has announced that George Mason University (GMU), Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), and AWS Educate have received the prestigious “Partnership of the Year” award for their joint efforts in establishing both two-year and four-year cloud degree pathways. This annual recognition highlights innovators shaping the future of education. This award further propels AWS Educate’s Cloud Degree initiative, which has garnered attention from governors across three U.S. states—Louisiana, Virginia, and Texas—who are collaborating with AWS Educate to integrate cloud curricula from K-12 through higher education. International implementations have also been initiated in the United Kingdom and Bahrain.
In 2018, NOVA partnered with AWS Educate to develop an associate’s degree specializing in cloud computing. AWS Educate provided vital instructional design support, curriculum frameworks, access to industry experts, and hands-on learning tools. “AWS Educate offered a platform for innovation and confirmed the strong student demand for this program,” stated Ethan Regan, NOVA’s provost of information and engineering technologies.
For GMU, it was a “logical decision” to build on NOVA’s groundwork by offering upper-level courses. In June, GMU announced the introduction of a bachelor’s degree in cloud computing. “We’re truly reaching the diverse population we’ve committed to serve, which includes students from all backgrounds and socioeconomic experiences,” noted Clara Hargrove, Associate Dean and Professor at GMU. “So why not extend cloud education to all students, including those who join us as freshmen?”
Ken Eisner, director of worldwide education programs at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and head of AWS Educate, emphasized the importance of creating pathways for students, whether right out of school or over time. “We want to ensure that students have robust pathways into the workforce and opportunities for continued learning and skill enhancement.” For more insights on AWS Educate, this blog post delves deeper into their initiatives.
