Public sector regulatory bodies are at a pivotal moment as digital assets make their mark in the private sector, manifesting as cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). There is an increasing demand from businesses, consumers, and governments to diversify away from a single currency or economy to bolster their state’s economic stability. This shift is steering us toward a “basket of currencies” model in global finance, incorporating interactions among stablecoins, CBDCs, cryptocurrencies, and traditional fiat currencies.

The White House, along with the US Treasury and Federal Reserve, has issued guidance via a series of executive orders and regulatory frameworks, offering a foundational roadmap for public sector entities to begin addressing these challenges and engage in responsible innovation. Establishing a resilient, transparency-driven, cloud-based infrastructure for potential US digital assets could enhance the country’s competitiveness and demonstrate a commitment to responsible innovation. Thus, there is a significant opportunity to explore the implications of adopting digital assets as government services are modernized and elevated to contemporary standards.

These discussions have prompted governments to accelerate their investigations into digital assets that can enhance efficiency, reduce transaction costs, and expedite settlement times. However, the continued operation of digital assets and stablecoin networks—integral to the future financial landscape—will necessitate the expansion of robust and secure cloud-based infrastructures, regardless of whether the architecture is centralized or utilizes a distributed ledger model.

At Amazon, we maintain that a sturdy, transparency-oriented, cloud-based infrastructure is the cornerstone of the future. This holds especially true for the upcoming generation of public sector digital assets. The AWS GovCloud (US) enables government clients and their partners to design secure cloud solutions that adhere to FedRAMP High standards, ensuring operations are secure and reliable for almost all digital asset scenarios. Services like Amazon Managed Blockchain and Amazon Quantum Ledger Database (Amazon QLDB) offer essential technological support for digital assets. The comprehensive AWS global infrastructure and services provide a solid foundation for public sector digital assets.

Nonetheless, this decision is not one that can be made lightly. Public sector chief information officers (CIOs), their teams, policymakers, and appropriate procurement processes must carefully deliberate this choice.

To aid in this process, AWS has teamed up with the industry analyst firm, Constellation Research, to produce a new research report that is available for public access. “The CIO Imperative for Digital Assets in the Public Sector” explores the vital subjects necessary for CIOs and their teams to get up to speed and embark on this transformative journey. This report can offer leaders the insights needed to prepare for one of the most substantial transitions in the public sector in the last fifty years.

We encourage you to join us on this journey, engage in essential discussions, and contribute to the ongoing conversation as the public sector focuses on these new opportunities, with cloud innovation leading the way in making informed and prudent choices. Moreover, as legislation evolves, it’s also essential to remain informed about workplace inclusivity; as highlighted in a recent article by SHRM, New York has enacted a law prohibiting hairstyle discrimination, which is a significant step forward in workplace equity [source].
