Background
Moeve, a company with nearly a century of experience, is recognized as a global leader in the energy sector. Historically dominant in oil and gas, Moeve is now shifting its focus toward clean and sustainable energy solutions—an essential endeavor in the fight against climate change and carbon emissions. Its sustainability initiative, known as “Positive Motion,” not only emphasizes the generation of green energy sources but also plays a crucial role in decarbonizing hard-to-electrify industries, such as aviation, while fostering job creation and promoting sustainable development in key regions.
A significant aspect of this strategy is the establishment of a second-generation biofuels (HVO) facility, which is strategically important for both Spain and Europe. Additionally, Moeve has embarked on green hydrogen projects, vital for the global energy transition. These initiatives position Moeve as a frontrunner in renewable energy and facilitate the transformation of its Energy Parks into centers for clean energy production, in alignment with the European Green Deal’s objectives to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. A fundamental component of achieving these goals is digitalization.
To this end, Moeve has chosen to implement a Track & Trace system, beginning with a pilot program at its La Rábida Energy Park (EPLR). The guiding principle for this initiative is to “think big, start small, and scale fast,” with a focus on solutions that can be quickly expanded across various project instances at its sites. Moeve selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) for this project due to its unparalleled cloud service offerings and compatibility with Moeve’s strategic vision.
Digitalization serves as a catalyst for Moeve’s energy transition, enabling the company to adopt innovative technologies that enhance operational efficiency while accelerating emission reductions. By embracing digital tools, Moeve is transforming its operations to boost energy efficiency, safety, and sustainability. The integration of advanced solutions, including Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, has empowered the company to manage its Energy Parks more effectively. These advancements not only optimize clean energy production but also facilitate real-time operational control, enhancing safety and efficiency. This transformation goes beyond mere infrastructure upgrades; it leverages digitalization as a vital instrument to fulfill Moeve’s sustainability ambitions and lead the way toward a cleaner, more responsible energy future.
The Track & Trace system provides real-time asset tracking, creates circulation plans and evacuation routes (differentiating between pedestrian and vehicle paths), and establishes dynamic geofences that send alerts to prevent unauthorized access to hazardous areas. Additionally, the system maintains a history of positioning data, enabling post-analysis and resource optimization.
This solution emerged from collaboration with key partners on AWS: Keepler as the system integrator, Tektelic as the device provider utilizing Semtech LoRa® chipsets, and Everynet as the LoRaWAN® network provider.
Challenges and Benefits of the Solution
Moeve is dedicated to continuous improvement and excellence, committed to maximizing efficiency and safety in all project developments. Digitalization has become a cornerstone for Moeve, facilitating the achievement of optimization goals while ensuring safety remains paramount. Currently, Track & Trace is in its testing phase at the La Rábida Energy Park, with aspirations for it to become an essential tool across all of Moeve’s construction projects, ensuring enhanced efficiency and safety.
Among its core functionalities, Track & Trace provides real-time asset tracking, circulation plan creation, evacuation route design, path differentiation for pedestrians and vehicles, and automated notifications for unauthorized access attempts. Furthermore, the solution records positioning history for effective post-analysis and resource optimization.
From a technical perspective, Track & Trace addresses multiple challenges:
- Advanced Maps: A primary challenge involves the capabilities of maps used in daily operations. As Moeve expands and constructs new roads, these routes may not yet be reflected on available mapping platforms. To overcome this, the solution allows for the integration of private maps (a “bring-your-own-map” approach) to enable tracking and path calculation on custom maps, ensuring accuracy and reliability through Amazon Location Service.
- Network Coverage: The newly expanded area must be equipped with IoT connectivity rapidly and affordably. For the La Rábida project, Moeve is utilizing Everynet’s public LoRaWAN® coverage. The LoRaWAN® standard, recognized by ITU-T for secure, carrier-grade IoT LPWAN connectivity, is ideal for these applications due to its long-range and low-power capabilities. Coverage within the Energy Park has been enhanced through the deployment of two additional gateways, with Everynet’s network already integrated with AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN via a roaming agreement in Spain, as detailed in this AWS developer guide.
- Device Cost and Battery Life: Another notable challenge involves the total cost of ownership for devices and their battery longevity. Frequently recharging numerous devices can be cumbersome. To tackle this, Moeve has employed Semtech’s LoRa Edge™ technology alongside AWS IoT Core Device Location’s solvers to streamline device operations. This approach allows devices to transmit raw scanned data to the cloud for location resolution, rather than computing positions locally, resulting in more economical devices and extending battery life by approximately 40%.
The system also allows for data exports in various formats, from printable reports to app-based access, enhancing real-time management and communication between teams.
Key benefits of the solution include:
- Operational Efficiency: Optimizes on-site circulation, reducing downtime and improving resource utilization.
- Enhanced Safety: Dynamic geofences and automatic alerts minimize risks and ensure a secure environment.
- Data-Driven Decisions: Positioning history enables detailed analyses for resource and timeline optimization.
- Automation: Digitalized processes save time, reduce errors, and eliminate manual tasks.
- Effective Communication: Real-time access to information enhances coordination and transparency among teams.
