In this post, we explore how Amazon VGT2 aids its partners in addressing pivotal iGaming inquiries by developing a data analytics application that leverages a modern data strategy using AWS. This approach has resulted in swift innovation while significantly reducing operational costs.
With a gross market revenue surpassing $70 billion and an estimated global player base of nearly 3 billion (according to a recent imarc Market Overview 2022-2027), the iGaming industry has witnessed tremendous growth in recent years. This creates a lucrative opportunity for an expanding array of businesses seeking to penetrate the market and capture a larger audience share. However, maintaining competitiveness in this somewhat saturated landscape proves to be exceptionally challenging. Thus, embracing data-driven decision-making is crucial for the growth and success of iGaming enterprises.
Business Challenges
Gaming companies generate vast amounts of data that could yield valuable insights and address critical business questions. Some of the prevalent challenges in the iGaming industry include:
- What influences a brand’s turnover—new players, retained players, or a combination of both?
- How can the effectiveness of a marketing campaign be assessed? Should a campaign be revived? Which games should be promoted?
- Which affiliates attract quality players with higher conversion rates? Which paid traffic channels should be terminated?
- What is the typical duration of a player’s activity with a brand? What is a player’s lifetime deposit?
- How can the registration-to-first deposit process be enhanced? What are the main issues affecting player conversion?
Despite capturing sufficient data, Amazon VGT2 identified two major obstacles in their ability to derive actionable insights:
- A lack of analysis-ready datasets (data in raw and unusable formats)
- A deficiency in timely access to business-critical data
For instance, Amazon VGT2 generates over 50 GB of data daily. While their partners have access to this data, its raw format renders it largely ineffective in answering critical business questions, thus hindering decision-making processes.
To overcome these obstacles, Amazon VGT2 opted to construct a modern data platform on AWS capable of delivering timely and meaningful business insights for the iGaming sector. This platform is designed to be efficiently manageable, low-cost, scalable, and secure.
Modern Data Architecture
Amazon VGT2 aimed to create a data analytics platform using a modern data strategy that could evolve alongside the company. Key principles of this strategy include:
- Developing a modern business application and storing data in the cloud
- Unifying data from various application sources into a common data lake, preferably in its native format or an open file format
- Innovating through analytics and machine learning while adhering to security and governance compliance
The modern data architecture on AWS applies these principles, with serverless and microservices serving as foundational elements.
The Amazon VGT2 Solution
Amazon VGT2 developed a serverless iGaming data analytics platform that provides partners with rapid access to dashboards featuring data visualizations sourced from various gaming data streams, including real-time streaming data. This platform allows stakeholders to utilize data for strategic planning, outcome evaluation, and agile responses to market changes. The ability to access insightful information promptly significantly impacts business turnover and revenue.
In constructing the iGaming platform, Amazon VGT2 quickly recognized the advantages of a serverless microservice architecture. They preferred to focus on innovation and application development rather than infrastructure management. Essential AWS services such as Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Kinesis Data Streams, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon Athena, and Amazon QuickSight form the core of this data platform. Transitioning to AWS serverless services has saved time, reduced costs, and enhanced productivity. The microservice architecture accelerates value realization, boosts innovation speed, and minimizes the need for future re-platforming or reengineering.

The data flow consists of these steps:
- As players engage with the gaming portal, associated business functions like gaming activity, payment, bonus, account management, and session management capture relevant player actions.
- Each business function is paired with a corresponding Lambda-based microservice that manages data ingestion from that function. For instance, the Session service oversees player session management, while the Payment service manages player funds, including deposits and withdrawals. Each microservice locally stores data in DynamoDB and handles CRUD tasks.
- Data records generated from the CRUD outputs are written in real-time to Kinesis Data Streams, serving as the primary data source for the platform’s analytics dashboards.
- Amazon S3 acts as the underlying storage for data in Kinesis Data Streams, forming the internal real-time data lake containing raw data.
- Raw data is transformed and optimized through custom-built ETL pipelines, stored in a separate S3 bucket within the data lake.
- Both raw and processed data are available for querying via Athena and QuickSight.
Raw data undergoes transformation and optimization, being stored as processed data using an hourly data pipeline to satisfy analytics and business intelligence requirements. The following figure showcases a sample of record counts and data sizes being written into Kinesis Data Streams, which require processing from the data lake.
These data pipeline jobs can be broadly categorized into six main stages:
- Cleanup – Excluding invalid records
- Deduplication – Removing duplicate data entries
- Aggregation – Grouping data at various levels of interest (e.g., per player, per session, or per hour/day)
- Optimization – Storing files in Amazon S3 in the optimized Parquet format
- Reporting – Triggering connectors with updated data (such as updates to keep readers engaged, check out another blog post)
