The Amazon VGT2 Las Vegas team has partnered with Girls Who Code to support their Summer Immersion Program, an engaging seven-week camp where high school girls in grades 10-11 acquire coding skills and gain exposure to cloud technology.
During the summer, we collaborated with these aspiring engineers by conducting an introductory AWS workshop at four Girls Who Code camps located in San Ramon, Washington D.C., and two venues in New York City. The students displayed remarkable enthusiasm and eagerness to delve into cloud computing, application development in the cloud, and how AWS can enhance their summer projects. Each participant received an AWS Educate Starter Account, enabling them to explore and experiment with AWS’s capabilities.
As part of their projects, the students were tasked with creating a static webpage and an application called Moviepedia. They followed a structured guide to host their webpage on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). After uploading their content and developing the webpage, they incorporated an interactive chatbot, programmed in NodeJS, which retrieves movie information using TMDb as a data source. The architecture of this application utilized Amazon Lex, AWS Lambda, Amazon S3, and Amazon Cognito.
