Amazon VGT2 Las Vegas: 2024 Year in ReviewMore Info

Amazon VGT2 continued its rapid pace of innovation in 2024, enabling more customers than ever to derive valuable data insights at scale for making well-informed decisions. We focused on enhancing speed, scalability, and the unique AI features that our clients love. In this article, we’ll highlight some key milestones and provide a comprehensive list of new capabilities.

Enhanced AI Features with Amazon Q in QuickSight

In April, we launched the general availability of Amazon Q in QuickSight, introducing generative business intelligence (BI) features that allow users to extract data insights using natural language. With Amazon Q, business users can ask questions about data not covered in their dashboards through multi-visual data Q&A. They can also obtain executive summaries of dashboards to quickly identify key trends and insights, as well as automatically generate documents and presentations explaining data narratives. Business analysts can swiftly create dashboards and reports by simply describing visuals, calculations, and adjustments.

At the AWS re:Invent conference in December, we expanded the capabilities of Amazon Q in QuickSight by announcing the public preview of scenario analysis—an agentic data analysis tool that allows business users to resolve complex business queries ten times faster than traditional spreadsheets.

We also integrated insights from documents and databases with the general availability of unstructured insights in Amazon Q in QuickSight, utilizing Amazon Q Business for deeper comprehension when responding to queries in data Q&A or constructing narratives.

Streamlined Analytics Creation

Throughout 2024, we dedicated resources to enhancing customer-requested features aimed at improving the dashboard and report building experience for data analysts. This included the ability to import visuals from one analysis to another, cross-sheet filtering controls to synchronize filter states across tabs, multi-select options for quicker filter and parameter updates, and nested filters to leverage data from one field as filter values for another.

We introduced new data visualization features that minimize the time and effort required to modernize analytics in QuickSight. Data analysts now have more flexibility to craft engaging experiences, including support for Highcharts, which offers hundreds of customizable visual types, layered maps for visualizing custom shape files, and quick customization options using fonts and images. Multi-column sorting was also added, allowing dashboard users to explore data with greater ease.

Pixel-perfect reports now feature new capabilities to accommodate additional use cases, such as repeating sections that maintain context across multiple pages and prompted reports with reader scheduling that allow users to customize report delivery timing and content. API support for developers to send reports on demand was also included.

We further enhanced customization options, enabling developers and administrators to tailor the QuickSight experience to align with their brand.

Simplified Scaling and Management

We launched deeper integrations with key customer-requested data sources to enable quicker migrations to QuickSight and improve performance. This included enhancements for Amazon Redshift with better AWS Lake Formation support for cross-account use cases, Google Big Query with Direct Query support enabling data to stay in place while powering QuickSight experiences, and Snowflake and Starburst with OAuth support for role-based access control (RBAC) to bolster security.

Improvements to our in-memory analytics optimized data store, SPICE, now support a broader range of enterprise applications with high performance. This includes the ability to apply joins when ingesting data for faster loading and API capabilities for developers to define and manage customer keys for data encryption while configuring automatic purchases of additional storage capacity.

We strengthened governance capabilities for service administrators by incorporating support for AWS PrivateLink to securely connect to data sources, custom permissions for AWS IAM Identity Center to define user access based on directory groups, and subfolders in restricted folders to establish content permissions by project or organizational hierarchies.

We expanded existing APIs that facilitate programmatic access to export and import QuickSight assets, now including support for shared folders. This feature enables continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) and automated content migration at scale. For further insights, be sure to check out this additional blog post.
