In a significant announcement, Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, has been selected by Octopus Energy, a pioneering EnTech (energy technology) firm and sustainable energy provider, as its preferred cloud partner. The UK-based energy retailer is harnessing AWS’s renowned scalability, security, and extensive service offerings—ranging from compute and analytics to storage, databases, and machine learning—to enhance its customer experience and facilitate the international growth of its renewable energy initiatives.
Octopus Energy has developed its cutting-edge customer service platform, Kraken, entirely on AWS. This platform utilizes the diverse AWS services to empower Octopus Energy’s customer support teams, improving their productivity by providing a comprehensive view of each customer’s journey. The teams can efficiently address customer inquiries through a singular, user-friendly dashboard. Customer data is stored on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and AWS Glue is employed to prepare and load this data for analysis. Kraken employs a mix of Amazon Athena for direct data engagement within Amazon S3 and Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), which simplifies database management with high throughput and availability. Thanks to Kraken’s insights, Octopus Energy can deliver tailored advice to over 65,000 customers simultaneously, with just 10 customer support representatives, slashing customer service costs by more than 50% compared to other leading energy providers.
Using the analytical capabilities provided by Kraken and AWS, Octopus Energy can assess energy consumption patterns down to individual households. By training neural networks on billions of smart meter data entries, the company analyzes energy usage at various times throughout the day. This data equips Octopus Energy to forecast energy consumption across its network and strategically decide when to acquire energy from the wholesale market. The success of the Kraken platform has led Octopus Energy to license the technology globally, partnering with significant energy providers such as Origin Energy and Hanwha Corporation in Australia, as well as E.On and Good Energy in the UK. By utilizing AWS’s global cloud framework, Octopus Energy has rapidly scaled the Kraken platform to support 17 million customers worldwide.
“With AWS, we have expanded our services to provide clean, green energy to 1.5 million UK households, representing around 5% of the total households in the country. We’ve also revolutionized the customer experience with innovative services like our smart tariffs, earning us a ‘Which? Recommended’ provider status for three consecutive years,” stated Alex Carter, CEO of Octopus Energy Group. “The cloud is a vital component for a low-carbon, decentralized smart grid. Our goal is to promote renewable energy adoption and ultimately serve 100 million customers globally. AWS provides us with the most comprehensive technology suite, allowing us to swiftly adapt to customer demands and market shifts. Throughout the ongoing pandemic, we have relied on AWS’s cloud services to maintain Kraken’s efficiency and ensure uninterrupted operations during this challenging period.”
“It’s inspiring to witness Octopus Energy harnessing cloud technology to reshape the energy sector and expedite the transition to a sustainable energy future,” remarked Brian Johnson, VP and General Manager for AWS in the UK and Ireland. “We are excited to continue collaborating with them as they leverage the extensive AWS service offerings to accelerate their global expansion and simplify the green energy transition.”
