Revolutionizing Healthcare with AI and Connectivity on AWS
In our daily lives, we often find ourselves navigating the complexities of the healthcare system, whether as patients or healthcare professionals. Unfortunately, many experience the frustration of long wait times, overcrowded facilities, high costs, and the challenges of navigating insurance claims. These issues stem from a fundamental flaw in the healthcare industry: it relies on disjointed, outdated technology. To address these challenges, Olive is bridging these legacy systems with the Internet of Healthcare (IoH) and deploying an AI workforce to streamline processes. Our mission is to enhance human health and happiness while alleviating the burdens of the healthcare system.
The Challenge of Healthcare Technology
Today, healthcare organizations are inundated with software solutions. A typical hospital employs various electronic medical records (EMR), billing systems, and different portals for each insurance provider, among other tools. Unfortunately, these systems fail to integrate, leading to a dehumanized care experience. Healthcare workers often become data routers, toggling between multiple systems, copying and pasting information, and spending up to six hours daily on data entry. In contrast, industries like finance allow for seamless transactions with a few clicks. However, patients still face cumbersome processes, such as filling out forms and navigating phone calls. The healthcare field is essentially operating on outdated technology, hindering the experience for everyone involved.
Regulatory requirements and fragmented systems have burdened healthcare workers and patients with excessive manual tasks. Caregivers now spend more time in front of screens than with patients, leading to administrative costs that consume one-third of all healthcare spending—a staggering $1 trillion problem that AI can help resolve. Olive’s mission is to forge connections that improve care delivery and reimbursement processes, ultimately enhancing the patient experience.
The Vision: Creating the IoH to Save a Trillion Dollars and Enhance Healthcare
“When I worked at my community hospital, it became clear to me that healthcare lacked a unified internet,” said Marcus Reed, CEO of Olive. “The patient experiences I witnessed firsthand revealed numerous processes that could be optimized. The solution was straightforward: create the Internet of Healthcare. Our aim is to connect the disparate technologies in healthcare to mend a broken system.”
Similar to the Internet of Things (IoT), Olive’s products facilitate the IoH by connecting health systems, payers, software, data, and patient information. We are transforming healthcare from outdated fax machines and manual data entry to a sophisticated, secure internet powered by artificial intelligence. The outcome? Our autonomous interoperability platform allows healthcare providers to focus on patient care. Each Olive instance operates continuously, sharing best practices and improving daily.
To realize this vision, we collaborated with AWS to utilize a HIPAA-compliant environment for streamlining healthcare tasks and building the IoH. This partnership is revolutionary for healthcare, a sector plagued by an overwhelming number of complex software solutions. Olive’s AWS environment paves the way for leading health systems nationwide to achieve greater connectivity and automation.
Implementation: Olive’s IoH and AI Workforce Powered by AWS
How does it work? Olive accesses numerous applications—both web and desktop—along with HIPAA/HITRUST compliant AWS services to perform her tasks. She benefits from proactive monitoring, an insights dashboard, and automatic updates.
Olive began her journey within AWS using basic Amazon EC2 instances. As AWS expanded its offerings, we leveraged new features to enhance Olive’s capabilities. Today, she employs various AWS technologies, including AWS EKS, Amazon SageMaker, data lakes, AWS Lambda, AWS Lambda Step Functions, and Amazon Redshift, among others. These services work together through a microservices deployment model. Instead of relying on standalone APIs and HL7 feeds, Olive utilizes advanced capabilities such as computer vision and AI to interact with system user interfaces, making individualized decisions and taking actions. Currently, we are exploring how to enhance her skill sets with new technologies like Redshift lake house architecture.
Olive effortlessly adapts to existing data sources, learning and streamlining numerous data-driven administrative tasks. Our AWS environment empowers our engineering team to effectively support the ongoing automation initiatives of health systems, particularly crucial in the wake of COVID-19.
“We chose AWS because it simplifies everything for us, our customers, and ultimately millions of patients,” states Jamie Fletcher, VP of Cloud Infrastructure at Olive. “Our AWS infrastructure provides the security, durability, scalability, and availability necessary for Olive to perform her transformative work.”
The effects of automation are already evident as Olive takes over repetitive tasks, enabling healthcare professionals to focus on aspects of care that require empathy and creativity—qualities that draw individuals to the healthcare field.
Olive’s Impact: Present and Future
To date, Olive has connected over 675 hospitals across the U.S., automating high-volume tasks to enhance the efficiency, affordability, and effectiveness of healthcare. Last year alone, Olive positively impacted over 60 million patients, generating over $100 million in savings, revenue increases, and efficiencies for the industry. Our collaboration with AWS opens endless possibilities for data-driven innovations, such as patients being able to access their complete medical records wherever they go. Additionally, pharmaceutical companies will gain unprecedented access to patient cohorts, revolutionizing treatment approaches for serious medical conditions. Imagine health systems harnessing big data analytics to track flu outbreaks or identify patterns in rare diseases. Picture doctors and caregivers who can dedicate their full attention to providing exceptional patient care.
