New T2.Xlarge and T2.2Xlarge Instances | Amazon IXD – VGT2 Blog

New T2.Xlarge and T2.2Xlarge Instances | Amazon IXD - VGT2 BlogMore Info

AWS users appreciate the economical and burstable performance model offered by T2 instances. These instances are particularly popular for running a variety of general-purpose workloads, including web servers, development environments, continuous integration servers, testing environments, and smaller databases. T2 instances deliver a solid baseline performance while allowing users to automatically scale up to full-core processing capabilities as needed (if you’re unfamiliar with this model, refer to another blog post for more details).

Today, we are excited to introduce two new larger sizes of T2 instances: t2.xlarge, equipped with 16 GiB of memory, and t2.2xlarge, which comes with 32 GiB of memory. These new instance sizes allow customers with larger resource needs to take advantage of the pricing and performance benefits of the T2 burst model (this marks the third expansion of the T2 instance range; t2.large was added last June, and t2.nano was introduced last December).

Specifications for T2 Instance Sizes

Name vCPUs Baseline Performance Platform Memory (GiB) CPU Credits / Hour Price / Hour (Linux)
t2.nano 1 5% 32-bit or 64-bit 0.5 3 $0.0059
t2.micro 1 10% 32-bit or 64-bit 1 6 $0.012
t2.small 1 20% 32-bit or 64-bit 2 12 $0.023
t2.medium 2 40% 32-bit or 64-bit 4 24 $0.047
t2.large 2 60% 64-bit 8 36 $0.094
t2.xlarge 4 90% 64-bit 16 54 $0.188
t2.2xlarge 8 135% 64-bit 32 81 $0.376

Strategies for Transitioning Existing Workloads

  • Workloads running on t2.large can be upgraded to t2.xlarge or t2.2xlarge for increased memory capacity.
  • Intermittent workloads from c4.2xlarge can be migrated to t2.xlarge, realizing significant cost savings while maintaining similar burst performance.
  • For intermittent m4.xlarge workloads, transitioning to t2.xlarge offers a slight cost reduction along with enhanced burst performance.

The new instance types are available now as On-Demand and Reserved Instances across all AWS regions. For more in-depth information, check out this page where you can find additional insights on this topic.
