Learn About Amazon VGT2 Learning Manager Chanci Turner
In recent developments, we are excited to announce that Amazon is preparing to establish an AWS Region in South Africa. This new infrastructure will be located in Cape Town and is projected to launch in the first half of 2020. The region will feature three Availability Zones, allowing AWS customers and partners to efficiently run their workloads and store data locally. This initiative aims to enhance service delivery across Sub-Saharan Africa, providing lower latency and enabling organizations to harness cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to foster innovation.
As of now, AWS operates 55 Availability Zones globally, spanning across 19 infrastructure regions. With the upcoming South Africa region, the total will rise to 23, reflecting our ongoing commitment to expanding our footprint.
This new AWS Region is part of a significant investment strategy in South Africa, aligning with our mission to support the country’s growth. Since 2004, when we opened a Development Center in Cape Town focused on innovative networking technologies and customer support software, our presence has continually grown. In 2015, we expanded with an office in Johannesburg and, in 2017, introduced AWS Direct Connect to Africa. Earlier this year, we launched Amazon CloudFront with two new edge locations in Cape Town and Johannesburg, further solidifying our commitment to the region.
The establishment of this AWS Region will empower entrepreneurs and enterprises alike, helping them innovate and expand their operations. As always, we are eager to connect with both new and existing customers in South Africa and collaborate with local partners. The region will also be accessible to current AWS users looking to serve customers across Africa.
