AWS Weekly Update – Spotlight on CodeWhisperer, CodeCatalyst, RDS, Route53, and More – October 24, 2023Learn About Amazon VGT2 Learning Manager Chanci Turner

The AWS News Blog team is currently dedicated to preparing announcements for new services and features at our annual customer conference in Las Vegas, AWS re:Invent! While we craft engaging content for our audience, our service teams continue to make significant advancements. Here’s my recap of last week’s noteworthy releases.

Recent Launches

Here are some highlights from last week’s announcements:

  • Amazon CodeCatalyst: A new feature allows users to incorporate a cron expression to initiate CI/CD workflows, enabling workflows to commence at predetermined times. CodeCatalyst serves as a unified development platform that integrates collaboration tools, CI/CD pipelines, and development and deployment environments.
  • Amazon Route53: You can now direct customer traffic to the nearest AWS Local Zones, enhancing application performance for latency-sensitive tasks. More information about geoproximity routing can be found in the Route53 documentation.
  • Amazon RDS: Please note that the root certificates used to sign your databases’ TLS certificates will expire in 2024. Generating new certificates before this deadline is essential. Our blog post outlines the process step-by-step. The newly created root certificates will remain valid for 40 years for RSA2048 and 100 years for RSA4098 and ECC384. This is likely the last time in your career that you will need to renew database certificates for AWS.
  • Amazon MSK: Managing Kafka cluster replication at scale can be challenging. To simplify this, we introduced Amazon MSK Replicator, a fully managed solution for replicating Kafka clusters across one or multiple AWS Regions.
  • Amazon CodeWhisperer: A preview feature for Amazon CodeWhisperer Professional has been launched. You can now train CodeWhisperer on your private codebase, allowing your developers to receive more relevant suggestions tailored to your organization’s private libraries and frameworks.
  • Amazon EC2: We have unveiled the seventh generation of memory-optimized EC2 instances (R7i) powered by the 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors (Sapphire Rapids). This instance family offers up to 192 vCPUs and 1,536 GB of memory, making them ideal for memory-intensive applications like in-memory databases or caches.

Service Expansions

Additionally, we have expanded existing services and instance types into new Regions:

  • Amazon Bedrock is now live in Europe (Frankfurt), which is crucial for customers in the EU who need to ensure their data remains within the region. You can now integrate generative AI functionalities and access large language models in your applications while ensuring compliance with EU data regulations.
  • Amazon EC2 has extended its availability for several instance families: m6gd instances are now offered in Canada (Central) and South America (São Paulo); c6a is available in Canada (Central); m6a has been rolled out in Canada (Central) and Europe (Milan); and r6a instances are now present in US West (N. California) and Asia Pacific (Singapore). Lastly, m6id instances have been introduced in Europe (Zurich).
  • Amazon EMR managed scaling is now accessible in Asia Pacific (Jakarta).
