Amazon recently enhanced AWS CloudFormation with support for several newly released AWS services, streamlining operational workflows and improving security capabilities.

AWS Guard Duty

AWS Guard Duty is a powerful automated threat-detection service that can be activated effortlessly without the need for agent installations. It keeps track of unusual account activities by analyzing sources such as AWS CloudTrail logs and DNS logs. With the latest AWS CloudFormation resource support, users can easily create detectors, configure whitelisted IP sets, and identify known malicious IP addresses through ThreatIntelSets.

Amazon Inspector

Amazon Inspector offers a low-impact, cost-effective, agent-based vulnerability scanning solution. It can be utilized to automate vulnerability assessments, seamlessly integrating them into your deployment workflows. The new AWS CloudFormation resource support allows users to create resource groups from tagged resources, establish assessment targets, and generate assessment templates that function like policy documents, specifying which rules the service will apply during analysis.

Service Discovery with Amazon Route 53

Moreover, Amazon Route 53 Auto Naming for Service Discovery, paired with the new AWS::ServiceDiscovery resources in CloudFormation, simplifies the process of utilizing Route 53 to register service instances. This is particularly beneficial for microservices deployed in Amazon ECS, facilitating service name management and discovery. Such features are crucial for implementing blue/green deployment strategies.

Resource Enhancements

In addition to these new services, 40 of the 248 existing supported resources have been updated, introducing 50 new property types. The changes span various services, enhancing functionality across the board. This ensures that users can leverage the latest features for optimal performance.
