The concept for “Tribes of Midgard,” envisioned as an engaging Viking-themed experience blending action role-playing and survival elements, originated in 2016. In 2017, Norsfell submitted their idea to the Montreal Ubisoft Indie Series competition aimed at local independent game developers, where they triumphed. This victory, coupled with a monetary prize, propelled “Tribes of Midgard” into full production. By the time the game reached its first alpha release in March 2019, Norsfell had integrated a backend infrastructure comprising Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, and Amazon GameLift.

“We opted to work on the backend early, rather than waiting for gameplay to be finalized before adding multiplayer features. Previously, we relied on a managed backend provider, but we aimed to create more of it ourselves using existing services; autoscaling was essential since we lacked a dedicated DevOps team,” explained Turner. “GameLift’s versatile fleet management system allows us to seamlessly redirect player traffic from one game version to another, facilitating the launch of test builds and updates without disrupting the player experience. It empowers us to plan for, react to, and adjust according to various scenarios.”

Building Strong Connections

Alongside backend enhancements, Norsfell adopted Epic Games’ Unreal Engine for the development and execution of “Tribes of Midgard.” The collaboration with Epic ensured a successful launch across all platforms. As Norsfell approached the finish line, they were awarded a MegaGrant from Epic, which provides financial backing to creators using Unreal Engine. Shortly after, Norsfell partnered with Gearbox Publishing for the official release of “Tribes of Midgard.”

“The MegaGrant was a significant boost to our achievements, instilling confidence in our project and propelling us forward. It also provided valuable visibility,” Turner noted. “Additionally, knowing that Epic utilizes AWS for ‘Fortnite’ validated our choice to work with AWS. It met our research and development requirements, and given that AWS SDK already supported Unreal Engine, integrating GameLift was straightforward.”

Data-Driven Insights

During the initial development phase and subsequent updates for “Tribes of Midgard,” the Norsfell team utilized Amazon GameLift metrics through its integration with Amazon CloudWatch. This solution offered insights into data that informed server optimization strategies and enhanced the overall player experience. For instance, by analyzing first placement fulfilled metrics and their alignment with selected player regions, the team could ascertain whether they were operating the appropriate number of servers in each area. Such data provided a baseline for determining how many servers should be pre-warmed in each fleet.

“When we launched the game, we pre-warmed all our servers out of uncertainty. The more we utilized GameLift, the more confidence we gained, allowing us to remain aligned with our baseline. We’ve implemented 19 updates in three years, and by our fifth update, we were adept at submitting capacity requirements when launching new releases,” Turner elaborated.

In terms of fleet configuration within Amazon EC2, Norsfell employs both on-demand and Spot Instances to optimize game performance while managing costs. Turner mentioned, “We don’t always operate with the same fleets, but we’ve had notable success using c4.large and c5.large Spot Instances; they’re highly reliable, resulting in minimal interruptions.”

With the introduction of new Amazon EC2 instances, Norsfell can adjust its fleet within an hour using Amazon GameLift and test performance without affecting the player experience. “The recently launched AWS Graviton instances are a significant advancement we’ve been anticipating,” added Turner.

Expanding the Tribe

“Tribes of Midgard” is now available for PC and consoles worldwide, with Norsfell continually enriching the game through frequent updates introducing new content, mechanics, and gameplay features. Player feedback is crucial in shaping these updates, and the studio fosters community engagement through the Midguardians program, which rewards players for constructive behavior. Thanks to ongoing development and strong community involvement, “Tribes of Midgard” has achieved impressive ratings on Steam, along with accolades such as Best of E3 Awards from Rock Paper Shotgun and PC Gamer, as well as recognition from MEGAMIGS, an annual gathering of the Quebec video game sector.

As Norsfell approaches a decade in the realm of game development, they are just beginning to build the expansive universe surrounding “Tribes of Midgard.” Turner concluded, “We can rapidly deliver updates and work efficiently because we make decisive choices and prioritize innovation. We also draw inspiration from the successful paths of other developers, which guided us to AWS and Amazon GameLift.”
