As we look back on 2020, it’s hard to ignore how tumultuous the year has been. The COVID-19 pandemic and various global events have dramatically altered our lifestyles, affecting countless individuals and organizations. In response to these challenges, many businesses have pivoted towards cloud solutions to better serve their customers and employees.

During our recent annual conference, we had the privilege of hearing from numerous clients regarding their transformations. Here are a few highlights:

  • GoldCorp Acquisition Example: One notable story came from Iron Mountain, who discussed how they facilitated their acquisition of GoldCorp, a significant event in the mining sector. By consolidating their distinct SAP ECC systems from three different data centers into AWS, they achieved a successful migration to SAP HANA, marking an essential step toward SAP S/4HANA.
  • Bristol Myers Squib’s Efficiency: Another presentation featured Bristol Myers Squib, who shared their journey of simplifying GxP compliance and slashing SAP management costs. They transitioned from a multi-site SAP ECC setup to a more streamlined SAP S/4HANA on AWS, enhancing key business processes throughout the drug production lifecycle.
  • Phillips 66 ERP Transformation: Phillips 66 illustrated their ERP transformation on AWS, which includes a new SAP S/4HANA implementation. This system enables them to adopt industry standards, integrate previously siloed data, and automate core processes, effectively future-proofing their operations.
  • Zalando’s Customer Experience Revolution: Zalando showcased how they reinvented the customer experience by integrating SAP S/4HANA with 36 AWS services. Their use of Amazon Lex for chatbots and Amazon Rekognition for automated image processing allows them to handle up to 90 million orders annually.
  • Volkswagen Group’s Digital Integration: On January 14th, Volkswagen Group will detail their collaboration with our AWS Professional Services Global SAP Specialty Practice to merge their SAP systems with their Digital Production Platform, an AWS solution that standardizes data exchanges across their 124 factories.

These examples represent just a fraction of the growing community that trusts AWS as their preferred platform for SAP innovation. The feedback we receive from our clients drives our continuous improvements in this domain.

In the latest ISG 2020 Provider Lens™ Quadrant Report for SAP HANA Infrastructure Services, AWS was recognized as a leader for the third consecutive year. The report emphasizes our ability to offer customers flexibility in their SAP journeys, ease of deployment and management, and leadership in the SAP infrastructure space.

Key Highlights from 2020 ISG Report

  • Infrastructure Leadership: AWS boasts the widest range of VMs for SAP, with over 65 options. Our instances can effectively support various workloads, including SAP S/4HANA up to 48 TB and SAP BW/4HANA up to 100 TB. This is made possible by the AWS Nitro System, which enhances performance by reducing the overhead associated with traditional virtualization.
  • Continuous Improvement: In May, we enhanced our High Memory Instances, providing increased storage and network bandwidth. We also launched Amazon EBS io2 volumes and Amazon EC2 R5b instances, which offer significant performance improvements for demanding workloads.
  • Flexibility for Customers: With over 11 years of experience in supporting SAP in the cloud, AWS provides numerous SAP services and a strong partner network. We offer various tools for backing up and archiving SAP data, ensuring customers have the flexibility they desire as they navigate their cloud journey. This is a crucial aspect, especially as many customers evaluate their long-term SAP strategies without halting innovation.
