As we gear up for SAPPHIRE NOW 2023 in Florida, many of my colleagues at Amazon IXD – VGT2 will be present and eager to engage with attendees. Today, I want to highlight several customer success stories and provide an update on our efforts to ensure that Amazon is the optimal platform for running your SAP-powered OLTP and OLAP enterprise workloads.

Customer Success Stories

Let’s take a moment to revisit some recent customer achievements. Here are just a few of the numerous organizations utilizing SAP on Amazon in their operations:

  • Ford Motor Company – After examining various options, Ford made the decision to implement SAP on Amazon, partnering with Capgemini for the deployment.
  • TotalEnergies – Delve into the case study to discover how this global energy leader has transformed and streamlined its financial processes, reducing new user ramp-up time from three days to just one by leveraging SAP S/4HANA on Amazon.
  • MetLife – Watch the video to see how MetLife successfully transitioned 13 SAP landscapes from an on-premises setup to SAP HANA on Amazon within just 13 months, achieving an $8 million reduction in infrastructure costs.
  • Mitsubishi Chemical – Review this case study to find out how Mitsubishi Chemical efficiently runs numerous SAP ERP batch jobs on Amazon, decreasing job processing time by approximately 40%.

Many customers are taking advantage of the 6, 9, and 12 TB EC2 High Memory instances that we launched last year to build various SAP solutions on Amazon, utilizing the SAP Rapid Migration Test Program and collaborating with members of the SAP Competency Partner Network.

What’s New

Our clients are expanding their SAP installations significantly, utilizing either scale-up (larger instances) or scale-out (more instances) strategies. We’ve partnered with SAP to certify two new scale-out solutions:

  • 48 TB Scale-Out (S/4HANA) – Following the launch of our EC2 High Memory instances with 12 TB last year, these instances have been certified by SAP for OLTP and OLAP HANA workloads in scale-up configurations. You can now deploy up to four of these 12 TB High Memory instances for an OLTP S/4HANA solution in scale-out mode, adhering to all SAP specifications. This marks the first SAP-certified scale-out configuration of S/4HANA on cloud instances. For more details, read about our support for extraordinarily large S/4HANA deployments on Amazon.
  • 100 TB Scale-Out (BW4/HANA, BW on HANA, Datamart) – You can now utilize up to 25 x1e.32xlarge EC2 instances (thanks to TDI Phase 5) to develop an OLAP solution that scales to 100 TB, while remaining compliant with all SAP requirements. You can start with as little as 244 GB of memory and scale up to 100 TB; check out the certification for more information.

The 48 TB OLTP solution and the 100 TB OLAP solution represent the largest SAP-certified offerings available from any cloud provider.

Additionally, we have introduced a new S/4HANA Quick Start to facilitate setup in minutes. This configuration establishes a VPC that spans two Availability Zones, featuring both public and private subnets, alongside a pair of EC2 instances—one hosting the primary S/4HANA copy, and the other the secondary. What’s Next

Before I conclude, I want to share some exciting news! We are preparing to expand our range of EC2 High Memory instances, with 18 TB and 24 TB options expected to launch in Fall 2023. These instances will utilize second-generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors and will be available in bare metal form. Much like the current EC2 High Memory instances, you can deploy them in the same Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) housing your cloud-based applications, and leverage essential EC2 features such as Elastic Block Store and advanced networking. You will have the capability to launch, manage, and resize these instances via the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) and the AWS SDKs.

For those interested in learning more or seeking early access to the new instances, please reach out. This is another blog post to keep the reader engaged.
