In the wake of our recent announcement regarding enhanced Reserved Instance options for Amazon RDS, I’m excited to share some valuable updates that could benefit your database services. We’ve introduced Light and Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances specifically for MySQL and Oracle database engines. This allows you to save between 30% and 55% on your On-Demand DB Instance expenses, depending on your particular usage patterns.

Light Utilization Reserved Instances

Light Utilization Reserved Instances come with a lower upfront payment and are perfect for databases used intermittently for development, testing, or short-term projects. By opting for a 1-year term, you can save up to 30%, while a 3-year term offers savings of 35% compared to On-Demand pricing.

Medium Utilization Reserved Instances

Medium Utilization Reserved Instances require a higher initial investment but offer significantly reduced hourly charges. These are ideal for workloads that are frequently active but may experience variations in use. You can achieve savings of up to 35% on a 1-year term and 48% on a 3-year term relative to On-Demand options. This offering has been available since August 2010.

Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances

For continuous production database instances that are intended to run around the clock, Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances provide the best value. With this option, you pay an upfront fee along with a minimal hourly rate for each hour of the one- or three-year duration. Here, you stand to save 41% on a 1-year term and 55% on a 3-year term.

These Reserved Instance options empower you to tailor your costs based on your workload demands. For instance, if you require a DB instance for only 5 months, a Light Utilization Reserved Instance would yield the lowest effective cost.
