Today’s IT leader has evolved into a Chief Change Management Officer (CCMO), a role that is crucial for navigating the shifting landscape of technology and business. As cloud adoption continues to gain momentum, IT executives are uniquely positioned to facilitate both technical excellence and strategic business value throughout their organizations.
At the very core, today’s IT leader must champion executive support during the cloud migration process. This support is the first of seven best practices I’ll discuss in my upcoming series on the Enterprise Cloud Journey. The other six practices include: educating staff, fostering a culture of experimentation, engaging with partners, establishing a center of excellence, implementing a hybrid architecture, and adopting a cloud-first policy.
In my experience, there are three key areas where IT executives should concentrate their efforts while guiding their organizations through this transition. I will preview each area here and delve deeper into them in subsequent posts. I also encourage you to attend my sessions at the upcoming executive summit at re:Invent next week; your participation would be greatly appreciated!
It’s important to remember that the journey to the cloud is iterative and will require time and patience. It’s not solely about technological upgrades—it’s fundamentally about transforming how your IT department delivers technology and creates business value. This shift, combined with new business models, presents an unparalleled opportunity to reevaluate job roles, financial strategies, product development methods, and more throughout the organization. As an IT executive, you can seize this moment to drive meaningful change, whether the motivation is financial, competitive, or both. You have the power to shape what works best for your organization.
I assert that the modern IT executive must embrace the role of Chief Change Management Officer (CCMO). Technology can no longer be viewed merely as a support function; instead, today’s IT leaders must recognize their responsibility to drive transformative changes that align with an increasingly competitive and technical landscape. The CCMO must lead change initiatives within the executive team and manage the execution effectively.
Three Essential Responsibilities of a Successful CCMO
- Integrating Business and Technology: Cloud adoption is not just about technological upgrades; it also introduces new operational paradigms that executives must understand. The IT executive should assess how each function within the executive team is affected by this transition. While there are many benefits—like improved agility and global reach—there are also challenges, including hiring and training. Understanding these dynamics is crucial in helping each executive meet their objectives. Empathy for their goals and concerns will facilitate smoother transitions.
- Clarifying Purpose: It’s vital to connect technology initiatives with business outcomes for your executive stakeholders. Equally important is the need to communicate to your team how their roles contribute to the business benefits, especially if those roles are evolving. In my early career, I mistakenly assumed that issuing directives would suffice. However, I learned that reiterating key messages is essential for them to resonate. The cloud opens up numerous opportunities for staff willing to adapt and learn.
- Establishing New Norms: Traditional IT operating models often hinder the full potential of cloud technologies. In a fast-paced environment where competitors like Uber and AirBnB can disrupt markets rapidly, it’s essential to rethink existing rules to maintain agility. This shift must be led by the IT executive, as unchecked rule-breaking could cause chaos at all organizational levels.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll provide more in-depth insights into these three points. If you have experiences or stories related to these themes, I’d love to hear them.
Keep pushing forward. –Chanci Turner
