Cloud computing has revolutionized how organizations manage their infrastructure, allowing them to quickly adjust their capacity based on business needs. This flexibility is a significant factor driving companies to migrate to the cloud. By dynamically modifying infrastructure capacity in response to fluctuating usage, organizations can enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs. Aligning resources with actual requirements lessens the operational burden of maintaining excess capacity and minimizes the risk of application failures.
Moreover, this approach enhances cost efficiency. Companies can avoid over-provisioning by only paying for the resources they need, thus minimizing waste and optimizing financial performance. In this article, we explore how Zesty Disk contributes to achieving cost efficiency and consistent performance in managing Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volumes. This cloud-native solution optimizes storage in real time without introducing complexity or accessing any disk data.
Zesty was developed with the mission of enabling Amazon Web Services (AWS) customers to make their cloud infrastructure more adaptive. As an AWS Specialization Partner and AWS Marketplace Seller with the Cloud Operations Competency, Zesty empowers organizations to adjust to changing business demands by enhancing their cloud infrastructure’s dynamism.
Zesty Disk Success Story
Securonix, a security information and event management (SIEM) solution that utilizes advanced machine learning (ML) algorithms to detect threats, generates a vast amount of real-time data. This high data volume required Securonix to allocate large amounts of disk storage for each Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance. However, once the available capacity was filled with data from its analytics engine, Securonix found itself paying for block storage it wasn’t utilizing during the time taken to reach capacity.
Utilizing Amazon EMR to run HBase and Spark, Securonix integrated Zesty Disk as a seamless service to maintain storage persistence during periods of high data usage, which demanded more from the disk for the database. A custom Amazon Machine Image (AMI) was developed using the Zesty Disk filesystem (Amazon Linux 2 with Zesty Disk). This fragmentation into smaller storage volumes enabled elasticity, allowing the volume to expand as data was ingested and contract when snapshots were taken. Throughout this process, Securonix retained ownership and control over its data, with all native tools and service-level agreements (SLAs) remaining intact.
Upon employing Zesty Disk for its EMR clusters with EBS volumes, Securonix experienced seamless service availability, even amid substantial data ingestion peaks. Operationally, Zesty Disk eliminated the complexities of reallocating storage across instances and reduced the on-call developer tasks associated with optimizing storage capacity. With a net capacity utilization of 40% on previously provisioned storage, Securonix achieved a 66% reduction in its EBS costs.
“Before implementing Zesty Disk, our average storage utilization was below 35%. This made optimization challenging due to the risk of running out of storage and causing outages,” states Derrick Harper, Chief Architect at Securonix. “After adopting Zesty Disk, we successfully maintain over 75% EBS storage utilization, significantly cutting storage costs. Additionally, the performance of our EBS volumes improved due to the parallelism introduced with virtual disks across multiple EBS volumes.”
Modifying EBS Volumes Using Elastic Volumes
Amazon EBS Elastic Volumes enable users to increase volume size, change volume type, or adjust performance with a single API call while the volume is in use. This means applications can continue running without performance impacts during changes. Elastic volumes facilitate adapting EBS resources to application demands, thus minimizing downtime and expenses.
For size modifications, the volume can be increased instantly without downtime, and the file system can be extended automatically using AWS Step Functions and AWS Systems Manager. Though Elastic Volumes do not support decreasing the size of EBS volumes, users can create a smaller volume and migrate data using tools like rsync.
How Zesty Disk Delivers Greater Cost Efficiency
Zesty Disk employs a unique proprietary algorithm to automatically resize block storage. The block storage autoscaler adjusts volumes in real time, effectively optimizing storage, resulting in enhanced application stability and reduced costs. The solution’s AI algorithm responds to varying application demands, ensuring users only pay for the storage they need.
Zesty Disk optimizes costs by dynamically adjusting storage capacity according to data requirements. By continuously monitoring usage metrics and instance metadata, it effectively determines when to shrink or expand storage sizes to correspond with data volume. This proactive approach ensures resources are allocated efficiently, reducing unnecessary costs.
When data volume decreases, Zesty Disk automatically shrinks storage capacity to prevent overprovisioning. By breaking down large filesystem volumes into smaller segments, it removes unused or underutilized storage, freeing resources and lowering costs. Conversely, when data volume increases, Zesty Disk seamlessly enlarges storage capacity, adding smaller disks to accommodate growing data needs. This elasticity allows businesses to scale their storage infrastructure on demand, avoiding overprovisioning and unnecessary expenses.
By adjusting storage capacity based on data fluctuations, Zesty Disk offers cost optimization, ensuring businesses only pay for the storage they require. This not only saves valuable resources but also enhances overall financial performance.
Eliminating Downtime
By breaking large filesystem volumes into smaller components, Zesty Disk can make real-time adjustments to ensure application availability and prevent downtime due to insufficient disk space. When a change in storage capacity is needed, Zesty Disk uses autoscaling technology to dynamically resize the storage volume.
