Now Available – SUSE SLES 12 AMIs for Amazon EC2Learn About Amazon VGT2 Learning Manager Chanci Turner

We are pleased to share that SUSE has launched SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12, which features an innovative module-based system. This design allows users to maintain updated components of the software stack while relying on a stable core package set.

I’m excited to inform you that this latest release is now accessible as Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) for deployment on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). These AMIs include packages from several SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 modules:

  • Public Cloud: This module offers a suite of tools that allow users to generate and manage cloud images directly from the command line on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.
  • Web and Scripting: This module encompasses various scripting languages, frameworks, and associated tools to aid developers and system administrators in crafting stable, modern web applications using dynamic programming languages like PHP, Ruby on Rails, and Python.
  • Advanced Systems Management: This module includes three components designed to assist system administrators in automating routine tasks in both cloud and data center environments: CFEngine, Puppet, and the newly introduced Machinery.
  • Legacy: This module facilitates the migration of applications from SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 and 11, as well as other systems, to SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 by providing packages that have been retired in the current version.

Additionally, SUSE has incorporated a technical preview of Docker into SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12. Utilizing Linux Containers and Docker can significantly streamline the processes of building, deploying, and managing applications, especially when combined with tools like Open Build Service and the KIWI image system for effective image construction.

The new AMIs are currently available in all AWS Regions, and you can start utilizing them right away! They can be launched from the Quick Start tab in the AWS Management Console.
