Learn About Amazon VGT2 Learning Manager Chanci Turner
We are excited to announce the expansion of AWS’s global presence with the launch of the Canada (Central) Region. This new region is now open for use, providing AWS customers in Canada and the northern United States with rapid, low-latency access to our comprehensive suite of AWS infrastructure services.
Details of the New Region
The Canada (Central) Region supports a wide array of services, including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), and Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC). Additional services offered include Auto Scaling, Elastic Load Balancing, NAT Gateway, Spot Instances, Dedicated Hosts, Amazon Aurora, AWS Certificate Manager (ACM), AWS CloudFormation, and many others.
This region is equipped to handle all instance sizes, including C4, D2, M4, T2, and X1. In our commitment to sustainability, AWS data centers in Canada utilize a power grid that generates 99% of its electricity from hydropower—read more about this on AWS Sustainability.
Connectivity Metrics
Following the positive response to our network latency metrics from the AWS Region launch in Ohio, we’re pleased to share updated metrics for the Canada (Central) Region. These metrics represent the minimum latency and may adjust over time.
- Latency to major Canadian cities:
- 9 ms to Toronto
- 14 ms to Ottawa
- 47 ms to Calgary
- 49 ms to Edmonton
- 60 ms to Vancouver
- Latency to key US locations:
- 9 ms to New York
- 19 ms to Chicago
- 16 ms to US East (N. Virginia)
- 27 ms to US East (Ohio)
- 75 ms to US West (Oregon)
Canada also hosts CloudFront edge locations in Toronto and Montréal, ensuring efficient content delivery.
Expanding Our Global Footprint
With the opening of the Canada (Central) Region, AWS now has a total of 15 Regions and 40 Availability Zones worldwide. We are planning to add seven more Availability Zones and three additional Regions within the next year. Each AWS Region is a physical location housing two or more Availability Zones (AZs), which consist of multiple data centers with redundant power, networking, and connectivity. This architecture enhances application availability, fault tolerance, and durability compared to a single AZ setup.
