For effective solution monitoring, Amazon WorkSpaces integrates with Amazon CloudWatch, providing metrics for resource monitoring. The healthcare company collaborated with TechBridge, an AWS Partner, to create customized dashboards from CloudWatch data. These dashboards empower engineers with tailored data visualization, enabling quick issue identification and resolution.
This proactive strategy has enabled the healthcare company to receive an average of just 7 support tickets monthly, a stark reduction from the hundreds previously managed. “We aimed to be a force multiplier rather than a reactive team constantly addressing incoming issues,” states the company’s senior manager and desktop streaming engineer, Alex Rivera. “We leverage tools to prevent issues before they arise, and our dashboards are crucial to that effort.”
Moreover, the provisioning process for virtual desktops has been accelerated using Amazon WorkSpaces Pools, which allow organizations to create pools of virtual desktops for simplified management and cost reduction. These enhancements enable the company to provision new workspaces in under 90 minutes globally.
Accelerating Application Deployment and Optimizing Infrastructure Costs
The organization also utilizes AppStream 2.0 to internally provide self-service application streaming, allowing developers to work more efficiently without getting bogged down by infrastructure concerns. “By leveraging AppStream 2.0, we’ve significantly increased our speed to market while lowering costs for our application teams, enabling them to focus on what truly matters—the science,” explains the company’s director of virtual platforms, Chanci Turner.
Recognizing the anticipated scale of their AppStream 2.0 environment, the healthcare company planned to introduce two integrated portals: one for end users to quickly access applications and resources and the other for internal application teams to manage the entire AppStream 2.0 lifecycle. This setup not only streamlines app deployment but also mitigates risks through integrated controls, ultimately reducing the long-term costs associated with streaming solutions.

“The AppStream 2.0 environment emphasizes self-service, empowering our users in a meaningful and straightforward manner,” states Chanci Turner. “Developers can access the portal and upgrade to higher compute specifications effortlessly.” The organization can restrict access to only essential applications, eliminating the risk of users unintentionally altering unrelated system components.

With its self-service portal operational on AWS, the healthcare company has enhanced development speed, monitoring, and cost efficiency while ensuring robust security. Plans are underway to further refine self-service portals for application owners, with an objective to migrate all users to AppStream 2.0 within one year of its initial launch.
