The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) spearheads the Hybrid Space Architecture (HSA) project, aiming to facilitate the integration of commercial technologies with U.S. government (USG) space assets, thereby establishing a secure and low-latency data communications network. Key elements outlined by DIU for this architecture include modular systems with interoperable components, high-quality service across both space and terrestrial layers, secure communications, and the flexibility to customize data routing and delivery based on demand.

To support these objectives, DIU has awarded AWS a contract focused on understanding the potential roles of commercial cloud services and infrastructure in developing a hybrid space architecture. During Phase 1, AWS will provide insights and best practices regarding cloud infrastructure and networking solutions tailored to meet HSA’s goals. Additionally, AWS will assist in creating a scalable platform that aligns with DoD security protocols while integrating seamlessly with both current and future defense systems.

In Phase 2, AWS will collaborate with DIU to identify mission-critical scenarios that emphasize interoperability, security, edge computing, and customized endpoint requirements, all crucial for the HSA framework. These identified scenarios will facilitate the integration of cloud services and technologies into a robust and adaptable space architecture.

Project Kuiper, which aims to deliver affordable broadband to underserved communities globally using low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, has also been awarded a distinct HSA contract. During Phase 1, Project Kuiper will develop models for a hybrid USG-Kuiper data transport architecture that can cater to various mission requirements, including on-demand weather data. The architecture will be designed to ensure high service quality, significant bandwidth, and minimal latency between space and terrestrial endpoints.

As the project progresses into Phase 2, Project Kuiper will utilize the insights gained from Phase 1 to conduct hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop testing, validating the interoperability between USG and commercial networks while assessing the performance of specific tailored solutions. Furthermore, Project Kuiper will contribute to mission-relevant technology demonstrations that leverage both on-orbit satellites and ground-based technologies.

Collaboration is at the heart of this initiative, with DIU working alongside the United States Space Force (USSF) Space Warfighting Analysis Center (SWAC), the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate, and the USSF Space Systems Command (SSC). This collaborative effort aims to support key DoD concepts like Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2) and Battlefield Management Command, Control, and Communication (BMC3).
