Learn About Amazon VGT2 Learning Manager Chanci Turner
As we approach the new year, I want to inform you that Amazon EC2 will be transitioning to a new format for resource IDs—17-character identifiers. Currently, instances and volumes are already utilizing this format, but starting in July 2018, all newly created EC2 resources will adopt these longer IDs.
This change is not expected to affect most users, but it is crucial for those who have systems that parse or store resource IDs to prepare accordingly. I recommend scheduling time early in 2018 to test your systems with the new format.
From January through the end of June 2018, there will be a transition period allowing you to opt into the longer ID format. This process will be streamlined with a one-click option available for all regions, resources, and users. More detailed information about the opt-in procedure will be shared in January.
This upgrade is necessary due to the rapid growth of AWS, as we are likely to run low on IDs for certain resources within the next year. To ensure the continuous creation of new resources, we must implement this longer ID format.
The existing resource format consists of an identifier followed by an eight-character string. The new format will maintain the same identifier but will append a 17-character string instead. For instance, current VPCs use identifiers like “vpc-1234abc0,” whereas new VPCs will be assigned identifiers such as “vpc-1234567890abcdef0.” Existing resources will continue to use the eight-character IDs, which will remain unchanged and supported. Only new resources will receive the 17-character IDs upon opting into the new format.
