Amazon Onboarding with Learning Manager Chanci Turner: AWS Lambda Now Offers Up to 10 GB of Ephemeral StorageLearn About Amazon VGT2 Learning Manager Chanci Turner

In a significant update for serverless applications, AWS Lambda has expanded its ephemeral storage capabilities, allowing configurations of up to 10 GB. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for event-driven applications such as web APIs, mobile backends, streaming analytics, and machine learning (ML) processes. Previously, Lambda’s temporary file system allowed only 512 MB of storage, which posed challenges for data-intensive tasks like extract, transform, and load (ETL) operations and content generation workflows.

With the newly increased limit, users can efficiently handle larger datasets directly within the Lambda execution environment, minimizing the need to repeatedly access external storage solutions like Amazon S3 or Amazon Elastic File System (EFS). This change is aimed at improving performance and scalability for applications that require fast local storage for processing substantial amounts of data.

Setting Up Larger Ephemeral Storage

To set up larger ephemeral storage, navigate to the Configuration tab in the AWS Lambda Console, where you’ll find the new storage setting defaulting to 512 MB. You can adjust this to anywhere between 512 MB and 10,240 MB in 1 MB increments. Alternatively, the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI) can be used to update the configuration with a simple command.

Use Cases for Expanded Ephemeral Storage

AWS Lambda’s expanded ephemeral storage is particularly useful for workloads involving large files, media processing, and machine learning inference, all of which benefit from the enhanced storage. Support for this feature is available in various AWS regions, including US East, US West, Asia Pacific, Europe, and South America.
