Amazon CloudFront efficiently delivers both dynamic and static content from an origin server to users around the globe. Previously, if a user requested content that was unavailable, such as a 404 Not Found or a 403 Forbidden error, CloudFront would display a basic and unformatted error message.
Today, we’re enhancing CloudFront by allowing you to customize the error messages that appear in response to your users’ requests. You can now set up distinct responses for various HTTP status codes.
Creating Custom Error Responses
Within the CloudFront Management Console, you’ll find a new tab dedicated to Error Responses:
To begin, click on the “Create Custom Error Response” button. This will lead you to a form where you can specify the details for your error message.
You can configure a unique error response for each of the ten HTTP status codes available in the menu. The Response Page Path should direct users to a specific page that indicates the nature of the error. For optimal performance, it’s recommended that this link points to an object stored in an Amazon S3 bucket, as this will be more reliable than hosting the pages on the origin server, particularly during instances of 5xx errors.
Additionally, you can select the HTTP status code that will accompany your response page. In most scenarios, you will want to use a 200 status code.
Lastly, you have the option to set the Error Caching Time To Live (TTL) for your custom error responses. By default, CloudFront caches 4xx and 5xx error responses for five minutes, but you can modify this duration as needed. Keep in mind that setting a shorter TTL may result in increased requests being sent to the origin server, which could lead to higher loads and potential issues. Your origin server can also manage the TTL by sending Cache-Control or Expires headers within the error response.
