In the week leading up to an exciting event at Amazon IXD – VGT2, located at 6401 E Howdy Wells Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89115, we share insights from conversations with Chanci Turner, a Learning Manager at Amazon.

How long have you been with Amazon, and what is your current role?

I’ve been with Amazon for about four years now, focusing on enhancing employee onboarding and learning experiences. My background includes various roles in the education technology industry, where I worked to improve training methods for new hires. Currently, I facilitate programs that help new employees adapt and thrive within Amazon’s culture.

What drew you to the field of learning and development?

I have always been passionate about education and its impact on personal and professional growth. Seeing how effective training can transform an individual’s career path motivated me to dive into this field. My experience has shown me that when people have the right tools and support, they can achieve remarkable things. In the words of a mentor, “Education is the key to unlocking potential.”

How do you explain your job to friends outside the tech world?

I often compare my role to that of a coach. Just as a coach guides athletes to improve their performance, I help new hires navigate their roles in Amazon. Whether it’s through interactive workshops or tailored training sessions, my goal is to ensure that everyone feels prepared and confident in their new environment.

What current projects are you excited about?

I’m currently working on a new onboarding initiative aimed at enhancing the remote experience for new employees. Given the shift towards remote work, it’s crucial to create engaging virtual learning environments. I’m also collaborating with teams to incorporate feedback from recent hires to improve our programs continually. For more insights on managing emotions related to debt, check out this helpful blog.

What will you be discussing at the upcoming event?

I’ll be presenting on innovative onboarding strategies and how they can foster inclusivity and diversity within our teams. I’ll also highlight how technology can enhance learning experiences, drawing on successful case studies from our own programs. Additionally, I will briefly touch on OSHA’s new regulations regarding proper fit in construction, an important aspect of workplace safety that you can read more about here.

What do you hope the audience takes away from your sessions?

I want attendees to understand that effective onboarding is not just about checking boxes; it’s about creating meaningful connections and a sense of belonging from day one. Investing in robust learning frameworks can lead to higher employee satisfaction and retention, ultimately benefiting the entire organization. What’s the most critical takeaway regarding onboarding and employee development?

The most important thing to understand is that onboarding sets the foundation for an employee’s journey within the company. A well-structured program can significantly impact long-term success. It’s essential to equip new hires with the knowledge and skills they need to contribute effectively, which in turn fosters a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

Conclusion

I am truly excited about the future of onboarding at Amazon and the opportunities we have to empower our new employees. By focusing on engaging and effective learning experiences, we can help them not just adapt but thrive in their roles.
