Learn About Amazon VGT2 Learning Manager Chanci Turner
As a developer who has harnessed the power of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to streamline my workflows, I am excited to announce the introduction of custom agents in the Amazon Q Developer CLI. This feature elevates the capabilities I rely on, allowing for effortless management of various development tasks.
In another significant update, the AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) will discontinue support for Node.js 18.x by November 30th, 2025. This version reached its end of life on April 30, 2025, impacting all CDK components that utilize Node.js, including the AWS CDK CLI and several ecosystem projects like JSII and Projen.
Additionally, we have integrated Model Context Protocol (MCP) support into Amazon Q Developer’s IDE plugins for Visual Studio Code and JetBrains. This integration enables developers to connect external tools or MCP servers, facilitating context-aware responses and intricate workflows. Previously, MCP was already available in Amazon Q Developer for other uses.
The Amazon Q Developer transformation capabilities have been upgraded to include a selective transformation feature for Java upgrades. This allows development teams to customize their modernization journey while minimizing risks.
Furthermore, Amazon Q Developer now features Claude Sonnet 4 within the CLI, enhancing coding and reasoning capabilities at no extra cost. This model has achieved a remarkable 72.7% score for agentic coding on the SWE-bench.
We are also excited to unveil a new agentic experience within the AWS Management Console, providing deeper insights into AWS resources and boosting operational troubleshooting efficiency. This enhancement expands the agentic capabilities of Amazon Q Developer across both IDE and CLI platforms.
Moreover, the Amazon Q Developer CLI now supports image inputs, revolutionizing development workflows by allowing developers to engage with visual assets like diagrams and architecture blueprints directly within the terminal.
Stay tuned as we explore the latest features of the Amazon Q Developer CLI, focusing on improving user experience, context management, and introducing powerful new tools. In my recent blog post, I discussed how to take control over your code with Amazon Q Developer’s new context features which include enhanced chat history and conversation management options.
