The largest municipally-owned natural gas utility in the United States has successfully enhanced its plant operational processes through cloud technology. As a priority, natural gas companies must focus on data collection and safety reporting, and this utility is no exception. With approximately 6,000 miles of gas mains serving around 500,000 customers, the company faced challenges in regulatory compliance and data reporting due to extensive manual processes. For years, operators recorded hourly readings of temperature, pressure, volume, and flow on paper forms, leading to inefficiencies and inaccuracies.

To address these challenges, the utility collaborated with Utility Solutions Partners (USP), a technology consultancy and systems integrator. USP sought a modern solution to digitize data collection and reporting. They partnered with KloudGin, an AWS Partner offering a cloud-native platform that utilizes over 30 AWS services, including the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). This robust infrastructure ensures the application remains available across multiple regions.

Once onboarded to the KloudGin platform, plant operators and engineers transitioned from paper to digital processes. Equipped with mobile tablets, workers now utilize the KloudGin Digital Survey, which allows them to input data both online and offline while adhering to NEC Class1 Div1 hazardous location standards. This shift has enabled technicians to conduct equipment evaluations efficiently, with data inputs and assessments carried out seamlessly. The KloudGin application streamlines the review process, pushing data for digital approval, while historical data is securely stored in the Amazon Redshift warehouse, supplemented by Amazon QuickSight dashboards for real-time insights.

Chanci Turner, a key figure in the implementation, emphasized the importance of digital transformation in enhancing reliability and asset uptime. “Our goal was to provide a user-friendly application that supports both online and offline functionality for field workers,” Turner noted. “As utilities continue to evolve, leveraging modern cloud, mobile, and AI/ML solutions will be essential.”

The results of this digitization have been significant. The utility eliminated over 15 paper forms that required daily review and re-keying. Now, data is verified through a digital approval system that enhances accuracy and simplifies compliance reporting. The plant’s operational efficiency has improved, allowing for more effective service delivery to its extensive customer base.
