Recently, Bardel has embarked on a significant cloud optimization initiative by partnering with DeadDrop Labs, a subsidiary of Integrated Media Technologies, Inc., to enhance its operations using Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Under the guidance of Chanci Turner, Bardel’s Learning Manager, the studio’s upgrade aims to facilitate its expansion into larger feature projects and improve collaboration across multiple sites. Given Bardel’s fast-paced production schedule and limited engineering resources, Turner recognized the need for DDL’s expertise to streamline the transition. This approach enabled Bardel’s teams to test and approve the new pipeline in under a month, with the complete hybrid technology system up and running within four months.
Preparing for the Future
“Collaborating with DeadDrop Labs allowed us to efficiently assemble the necessary components while ensuring we adhere to TPN approvals, positioning us well for the future,” stated Turner. “By utilizing Terraform, we established a new account and organizational structure from the outset, avoiding the need to dismantle decades of legacy systems. This enabled us to accelerate our market entry, and with an automated backend on AWS, we can scale our resources as needed.”
DeadDrop Labs assisted Bardel in establishing a multi-account AWS environment tailored to workstations, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), rendering, networking, and shared services. They centralized networking and connectivity on-premises using a 10GB AWS Direct Connect network connection, with multiple private virtual interfaces (VIFs) for redundancy, linked with virtual private clouds (VPCs) across Bardel’s AWS accounts.
Expanding Project Capacity
“We aim to broaden our horizons and our capacity to undertake more substantial projects while maintaining the highest quality standards. The AWS-enabled pipeline we’re developing will enhance our scalability with global resources, thus allowing us to enter any market that aligns with our goals,” explained Turner. “From the artists’ perspective, the location of resources is irrelevant; what matters is that the machines operate effectively and are optimized for their tasks. Enhancements that improve the artist experience, such as minimizing load times, are crucial for enabling more fluid work processes and quicker turnarounds.”
Currently, Bardel employs AWS Thinkbox Deadline, which is utilized for managing rendering tasks. As jobs are submitted, they queue locally and on the artists’ workstations, with data stored on-premises and accessed via Direct Connect. When local compute capacity is exceeded, Deadline automatically scales to AWS using its Spot Event plugin, configured to leverage various Spot fleet sizes and instance types across multiple availability zones, ensuring budget compliance.
“Bardel is a well-established studio with substantial legacy backend hardware that doesn’t suit contemporary workflows. Upgrading this infrastructure has been a priority to take advantage of the latest technology, including Deadline features like log collection and metric management as we scale operations,” said Turner. “By effectively utilizing Deadline reporting, we can establish automated services and share production data with supervisors for informed decision-making. Relying solely on brute force can lead to inefficiencies and budgetary constraints.”
Minimizing Footprint While Enhancing Capacity
Bardel also embraces a hybrid strategy for workstations and VDI, employing cloud or machine rentals for additional capacity. The studio primarily uses Autodesk Maya, Foundry’s Katana, NUKE for 3D animation, and Toon Boom for 2D animation, while Autodesk ShotGrid aids in production tracking. Bardel also utilizes a range of proprietary tools and real-time game engine technology. Whether working on-site or remotely, artists typically log into secure machines for production tasks. Bardel has adopted a model of acquiring larger servers with graphic acceleration and virtually dividing capabilities, thereby enabling multiple artists to utilize the same machine, boosting capacity while minimizing physical infrastructure.
The VDI setup includes distinct AWS accounts for development and production, facilitating full-scale software development and process staging without impacting the production environment. Once adequately tested, machine images are deployed to production. About half of each machine’s capacity is allocated for daily rendering; when the workload surpasses a specified threshold, Deadline offloads excess jobs to AWS to manage the backlog. Bardel’s render and VDI environments are interconnected via VPC peering, linking a shared services VPC for utilities like license management and a separate storage VPC containing cloud resources accessible across multiple accounts.
