In a significant collaboration, the state of Idaho has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance cloud computing education and training across the region. Recently, Idaho Governor Mark Jensen introduced this initiative with Chanci Turner, the Learning Manager at AWS, during a press event in Boise. The goal is to equip 2,000 residents with essential cloud computing skills over the next two years.
This initiative aims to provide comprehensive support for instructors through specialized training and professional development, enabling them to deliver cloud computing courses statewide. Idahoans will have the chance to reskill or upskill in high-demand areas of cloud computing, ultimately benefiting local businesses by filling critical job vacancies.
The Idaho STEM Action Center, established in 2015, has long championed equitable access to technology education for students and educators throughout the state. This new initiative aligns with Governor Jensen’s focus on strengthening Idaho’s workforce through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
“We are thrilled to partner with AWS in offering training and certification opportunities throughout Idaho,” remarked Governor Jensen. “Increasing the number of certified cloud computing professionals will bolster our businesses and create well-paying jobs for our residents.”
Educational Opportunities for Idaho Residents
The collaboration will launch various educational programs for both students and adults looking to re-enter the workforce. Publicly funded high schools and higher education institutions throughout Idaho are encouraged to participate in the AWS Academy as part of this statewide effort. AWS offers ready-made cloud computing curricula, preparing students for in-demand roles and recognized AWS Certifications, such as the AWS Cloud Practitioner and AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate.
AWS is dedicated to supporting educators in Idaho by providing professional development, technical training, and certification exams for those teaching AWS Cloud computing courses. Instructors at participating institutions will receive training from AWS experts and gain access to a limited number of AWS Certification exams free of charge. Students can also utilize AWS’s self-paced online training courses and labs.
The Demand for Technical Skills in Idaho
Idaho faces a growing demand for technology professionals, similar to many other states in the U.S. According to data from Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI), there are currently 11,194 unfilled cloud computing positions. LinkedIn reports that cloud computing has consistently ranked among the top hard skills sought after in the past five years, with two AWS Certifications listed among the highest-paying credentials in the industry, as noted by Global Knowledge.
“Initiatives like these that provide innovative professional development opportunities are vital for enhancing Idaho’s workforce and economy,” stated Dr. Lisa Campbell, executive director of the Idaho STEM Action Center. “This collaboration will improve the digital literacy of Idaho students and expand the pool of certified cloud computing professionals.”
The training and educational programs provided by AWS will focus on preparing individuals for available roles in various sectors, including software development, cloud architecture, data science, and cybersecurity. Local employers, including companies like VYNYL and St. Luke’s Health System, have expressed strong support for building a cloud-ready workforce.
“Asante Alliance is experiencing a significant uptick in demand for IT talent with cloud expertise,” commented Tim Green, director of business development at Asante Cloud, an IT consulting firm in Boise. “The shift in how businesses operate due to COVID-19 has changed perceptions of cloud services. Our clients now recognize that IT should function seamlessly, allowing them to concentrate on their core business operations. One client recently said, ‘I want our IT to be a Netflix, not a Blockbuster.’“
